The city as a canvas

Description Practical

Street art in downtown Brussels: vandalism or artistic expression?

The center of Brussels is a unique mix of historic facades, bustling squares, and hidden alleys, where street art pops up unexpectedly and constantly interacts with its surroundings. Street art here is not a marginal phenomenon, but a lively and constantly changing urban narrative that teaches you to look differently at streets you may have crossed many times before. This tour shows Brussels as an open-air gallery where art is freely accessible to everyone.

From message to imagination

Signs and images on walls have been around for centuries. In Brussels, you can find them in the most unexpected places: drainpipes, electrical boxes, lampposts, walls, and corners. Stencils, stickers, paste-ups, reliefs, installations, and spray-painted drawings contribute to a rich and diverse street scene. What once began as simple tags by "graffiti vandals" has grown into a fully-fledged art movement. Some artists still work anonymously or under a pseudonym, while others are highly regarded in galleries and museums.

Street art often conveys a social or political message, while at the same time being playful, poetic, or aesthetic. Artists from Belgium and abroad respond to an urban environment dominated by advertising, slogans, and commercial images. During this tour, you will discover how works by Invader, Bonom, Isaac Cordal, Jaune, and others enrich the center of Brussels. An eye-opening experience!
