Maison Grégoire Lagasse: modernism and light effects

A unique residence by Henry van de Velde in Uccle
Henry van de Velde, pioneer of Art Nouveau and versatile artist, made a radical transition to modernism in the 1920s. His design for Professor Grégoire Lagasse's house on Dieweg, completed in 1933, showcases this new vision in all its glory. The building reflects the International Style with its sleek facades, white plastered walls, and pronounced geometric lines, marking a clear break with Van de Velde's earlier ornate style.
Inside, the house is characterized by a central staircase that distributes light throughout all the rooms. Large rectangular windows create a dynamic interplay of full and empty spaces and allow sunlight to flood in. Each room has been designed with attention to functionality, comfort, and harmony, a characteristic of Van de Velde's modernist period.
The house has been a protected building since 1982 and opened its doors as a 'gallery-observatory' in 1995. During the interior tour, you will not only discover Van de Velde's architectural subtleties, but also how the house now serves as a platform for young international artists.
