The Cinquantenaire park

Description Practical

A park steeped in history and ambition

Did you know that the Parc du Cinquantenaire was created to mark the 50th anniversary of Belgian independence and later served as the backdrop for several world exhibitions? The park covers some 30 hectares and combines impressive sightlines, shady avenues, and fountains with architectural highlights. At the center of the park stands the iconic triumphal arch, a masterpiece of neoclassical style that has welcomed visitors since 1905. During this guided walk, you will discover how the Jubelpark became a symbol of national pride, urban ambition, and cultural progress.

World exhibitions

The park opened in 1880 as an exhibition space for Belgian art, industry, and science, and in 1888 and 1897, world exhibitions were held there, attracting thousands of visitors from Belgium and abroad. The triumphal arch marks the central point of the park and served as the backdrop for large-scale ceremonies and festivities. The temporary pavilions and exhibition buildings were later removed to make way for the current green areas.

Today, the Jubelpark offers a diverse mix of culture, leisure, and architecture. Here you will find museums such as the Museum of Art and History, the Army Museum, Autoworld, the Pavilion of Human Passions, and the Grand Mosque, as well as sports fields, a summer bar, and open-air venues. This walk provides insight into the urban development of Brussels, the world exhibitions, urban landscape architecture, and the role of the park as a meeting place in modern city life.
